Campus
The University and student halls are situated across the road from one another and just outside of the town of Landshut. A bus stop (No. 3) is just outside the main University Building and the journey into town takes around 10 minutes. 15 minutes if you are on a bike. The International Office (AAA) has 4 bikes which are available for foreign students to use. However arranging use of the bikes is up to the individual.Halls
The rooms are not overly large but they are fully equipped (mattresses, blankets, duvets, pillows- all suitable for allergy-sufferers) The student needs to bring duvet covers, pillow cases, towels and other personal items with them as these are neither provided nor available to buy on campus. Every room has TV,Telephone & Internet connections (internet is free over the FH-network).Students have their own bathrooms (with shower, toilet & handbasin) but share a kitchen with 6-8 others. It is forbidden to use stoves or similar appliances in the rooms (fire hazard). The kitchen is not just there for cooking, it is a good area to relax, meet new people and chat. Everyone has their own shelf in the fridge and pots, pans, plates and cutlery are also on site, so there is no need to purchase any beforehand. Washing Machines & Dryers are to be found in the cellar of House 1, there is also a Fitness Room in House 2 and a TV room between Houses 3 & 4.
Landshut is not Munich – the nightlife leaves somewhat to be desired, (there is one nightclub in the town centre) but there are lots of bars, offering a variety of different drinks & cultures. If you feel like staying in, the Campus Pub (WH-Kneipe) is cheap and cheerful and often holds theme night parties and other amusing events. (Cellar,House 1)
The caution must be paid in advance. “No money, no key”- but the FH is aware foreign bank transfers cost time and money so exchange students are allowed to pay the amount in CASH on arrival. For this reason we ask that you please arrange your arrival to coincide with office hours. The halls of Residence Office (Studentenwerk- Frau Kufner) is situated in the university (HS 037) and is open Monday-Thursday 08.00-12.00 & 13.30-16.00 and Friday mornings. Should you be unable to arrive during these hours then it “may” be possible to collect your key from the caretaker (Hausmeister) Mr. Kammermeier who lives on-site in halls. Ideally students should call Mr. Kammermeier (0049-(0)871 51946) in advance and arrange a convenient meeting time. However (although the caretaker often helps students out of office hours) it should be noted that Mr. Kammermeier is not on 24 hour call out and therefore cannot be held accountable should he be unavailable on arrival.
Library
The Library is open 24/7 since winter 2001/2002. A range of subject literature and magazines are available or can be borrowed through the inter-library programme. In the campus library students also have free access to the internet, day or night (during the semester) For those students who are interested in general (non-study specific) books, membership at the town library is recommended.Computers
The Computer Rooms are reasonably well equipped and students can usually find a free computer. Printers are also there for student use, however students are expected to provide their own paper. The rooms are generally open Monday-Thursday 07.00-18.30pm & Fridays 07.00-16.00pm. During holidays until 17.00 & 12.00 respectively. However many students make use of the internet access in halls for their own computers or use those in the library. Students require an account to use the computers but those who participate in the orientation week complete this together at the start of the week.Registration
There is also a special exception here. Exchange students are not restricted to the usual registration dates. Registration is completed within the orientation week. However it is important to remember the following:- Bank receipt for the uni fees
- 2 passport photos
- proof of health insurance cover (EU students, the necessary E128/E111 form is available in your home country) Non EU Students please ask your health insurance company if they have a contract with a german company- if so please bring it with you, if not then you will need to insure yourself in Germany. This can cost around €50.-/Month by e.g. Barmer, DAK.
Bank Account
It is necessary to have a German bank account but worry not, opening accounts is completed together during the first day of the orientation week. During this time you also have the opportunity to pay the semester fees (€62-compulsory) and the sport fees (€7.50-optional). Therefore it is advisable to take cash with you to the bank.Authorities
We also complete all official paperwork during the orientation week. You will need the following:- 2 copies of your passport (non EU) or personal ID card (EU)
- 2 passport photos
Note: Please bring sufficient passport photos with you ( minimum of 4) - it saves time and energy!!
