Living in Landshut
Your stay in Landshut will be a mixture of studying and living. I bet you can find your way around in the FH Landshut, but how well do you really know the Landshuter student life? Where is it the cheapest to go shopping? Are there any good football clubs in Landshut? Which pub is the best? Where can I go to the movies in Landshut? Where can I meet the original Lower Bavarians? All these questions will be answered in this pamphlet, but a very good way to find out more is to ask your fellow students and friends. You can discover a lot on your own, but together with a friend you´ll find twice that much.![]() |

In addition to the department stores there are numerous little shops where you can find almost anything. You will find them by hanging around Ländgasse, Altstadt, Neustadt, Freyung and the connecting narrow lanes. Food you can buy cheapest in Aldi, Lidl or Norma. Supermarkets like Minimal, Edeka or Krone are a bit more expensive, but the selection is also better. In the industrial centers you will find still many more shops and supermarkets. Here is a sample of some shops:As an exchange student you simply have to learn to know the German bread culture. Therefore we recommend:
Gebel (in the Schirmgasse as well as at the Ländtor);
the best Landshuter bakery Brotkastl (in the Ländgasse as well as in the Niedermayerstrasse);
the first ecological bakery Hofpfisterei (in the Altstadt); the very best bread and still very good prices. (The one who hasn't tried "Pfister Weizen" doesn't know how good bread can taste)
Achallplatten Meyer (Schirmgasse); a pleasant alternative for the big CD-markets. They know a lot about music - however, the prices are a bit more expensive.
3.-Welt-Laden (Grasgasse); coffee and other things from the developing countries
Stegfellner (Altstadt); delicatessen shop with very friendly service, but you will be surprised on how much you can spend on food!
Theaters and Cinemas
Theaters
The Südostbayrisches Städtetheater in Bernlochner (close to the Isarbrücke between Ländtor and Christuskirche) puts well-known and classical plays on stage. The Kleines Theater between Maxwehr and Bischof-Sailer-Platz, on the other hand, performs new, good, often topical plays with a small cast. You could call it alternative theater. The Kulturforum has a three-month-program which concentrates on music and revue. The program is available in some shops in Landshut.Cinemas
All the cinemas are located in the city (Kronprinz and Prinzess opposite the Martinskirche; Palast, Palette and Roxy near the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in the Isar-end of the Altstadt; Burg and Kühlhaus are in the Zweibrückenstrasse. The weekly program (Wed.-Thu.) is on display in the showcases in front of each cinema, on Wednesdays in the free papers Wochenblatt and Landshut aktuell, and on Thursdays in the Landshuter Zeitung.Sports
For sepectators
Football: Almost every district and village has its own football club. They play on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The two "best" clubs in Landshut are the SpVgg Landshut in the regional league (5th league) and the TuS Landshut-Berg in the 6th league. To a true football fan we recommend the weekly Bundesliga-matches of the FC Bayern München, the 1860 München or the SpVgg Unterhaching in Munich or the 2nd Bundesliga in Nürnberg at the Club.
Ice hockey: EV Landshut
Basketball: TG Landshut
Handball: ETSV09 and TG Landshut
Volleyball: Vilsbiburg Damen
For athletes
The FH Landshut offers its students many sports facilities (almost everything from basketball, volleyball and football to karate, dance and scuba-diving) for only € 7,50 per semester. Some sports require instructors' presence, in others you can use the sports grounds or hall on your own. See the Studienführer for more detailed information.Additionally, there are many hockey arenas and a few streetball/basketball fields around the town. In the Flutmulde (the field next to Isar) stand a few football goals and behind the ice stadium there is a jogging path. In thewinter you can go ice skating at the ice-hall of the EV Landshut.
The Städtisches Schwimmbad (in the Stadtpark, at the corner of Piuskirche) is open from 6 a.m. till 8 p.m. (on Saturdays and public holidays from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m.). At the outdoor swimming pool there is a long waterslide. There is also a sauna and much more.
In Landshut there are many gyms where you can play squash, tennis or badminton, such as the HappySports in Ergolding. The prices depend on the time of day you want to play; the weekends are the most expensive, the nights are the cheapest.
Bars and Restaurants
Cafés
There is a wide range of decent cafés in the Altstadt;Restaurants
Many restaurants in Landshut are run by foreign hosts; in addition to the numerous pizzerias and Greek places, there are also Chinese, one Indian (Zweibrückenstrasse), one African (Ländgasse) and many more restaurants, which you can find in the telephone book under "Gasthäuser". The following are good-quality traditional German restaurants:Bernlochner (Isarbrücke); good food in every price group
Wochenblatt (Altstadt); on Mondays pasta-bar (all-you-can-eat buffee)
Haindlgarten (Papiererstrasse); dark, old and rustic
Heißbräu (Ländgasse); good food, good prices
Alt-Landshut (Isarpromenade); very comfortable and good
Heilig-Geist-Stüberl (behind the Heilig-Geist-Kirche)
Zum Freischütz (Neustadt); here nothing has changed since about 1930
Gasthaus Berndorf (about 5 km south-east from Landshut); a real insiders' tip, here nothing has ever really changed, not even the prices! Only snacks, no hot meals, but the best apple pie in the whole Lower Bavaria and one of the most beautiful "Biergarten" in the country.
What else is there to do
Every day, apart from Fridays, there is a market in the Altstadt, where the farmers from the surrounding villages offer their goods fresh and cheap. On Fridays there is a Wochenmarkt with vegetables, fruits, eggs and much more for much lower prices than in super markets. Also fish, cheese and Turkish specialities can be bought there.
Every Saturday there is a flee market in Ergolding and in May there is a big one on the Theresienwiese.
The Keramikschule sells its products every now and then.
The Landshuter Hochzeit takes place every four years in June/July (again in 2009); four weeks of medieval festival in town. Remember to book your tickets early!!
In the winter the Christkindlmarkt takes place in Freyung.
Spring- and summer-Dult (beer tents, roller coaster and everything).
Café International at the Orbankai (organizes every now and then something international).
We hope you enjoy your stay in Landshut!
